What Can ADD Coaching Do For You?
Not everyone with ADD/ADHD needs a coach, but if you've found the right combination of medications, have learned about ADD/ADHD and its effects on you, and gathered some support, yet still find yourself unable to take action or struggling to manage your life, then ADD Coaching may be just what you need.
With the help of an ADD coach, you can deepen your learning, improve your performance and enhance your quality of life. You will:
- Get the structure and support you need to set and prioritize goals, stay on track, and maintain attention on current tasks
- Learn to recognize your successes as you master new skills and techniques
- Develop new organizing skills so you can set up and maintain systems to better manage your time, deal with the paper in your life, and tackle those irksome jobs you have to do like balancing your checkbook and filing
- Discover ways to maximize your strengths and talents so you can function at your best
- Learn strategies for getting "unstuck" and moving past procrastination and perfectionism so you can get more things done more consistently
- Identify bad feelings and their triggers while you explore more effective ways to respond
- Gain increased self-confidence as you get the encouragement and guidance you need to manage frustration, minimize under-functioning, and overcome the sense of overwhelm
ADD coaching is not therapy. Therapy promotes healing by helping you deal with emotional problems and grow beyond them, and is an important part of your treatment. ADD coaching, on the other hand, is concerned with the practical aspects of day-to-day living. An ADD coach works one-on-one with clients on their specific ADD issues so they can learn practical ways to take ownership of their time, their space and their life.
For many adults with ADD, coaching can make the difference in living a more effective, fulfilling life. In fact, ADD coaching can be an important part of a comprehensive program for people with ADD who want to maximize their potential.
So How Does ADD Coaching Work?
ADD Coaching is a one-on-one partnership between you and your coach, and is conducted over the course of a month. We meet over the phone or, in some cases, in person a good thing for people who want to combine coaching with hands-on organizational help. (You must live in the UP or
NE Wisconsin
for hands-on sessions).
Each coaching program is customized to the needs of the individual. In general, though, we'll engage in a number of different activities over the course of a month. Each activity is designed to help you clarify your goals, develop action plans and then, stay on track. Standard activities include:
- Work Sessions
- Support Sessions
- Email or Phone Check-ins
- Optional On-site Organizing Sessions
1. Work sessions
Work sessions are the core of the coaching program. They generally last 30-60 minutes. In the work sessions, we'll engage in a coaching dialogue that will help you clarify your goals and issues. You'll get the guidance you need to design solutions and create action plans that will lead to your desired long- and short-term outcomes. You'll identify obstacles to your progress. And you'll receive the support, structure and information you need to succeed.
2. Support Sessions
Support phone sessions are shorter than the work sessions usually 15-30 minutes but are important for helping you stay on track. In the support sessions, you'll focus on how you're working out your action plan. You'll identify areas where you feel stuck and get the help you need to move past them. You'll also find ways to apply your new skills and systems in your day-to-day life.
Depending on your goals, you should expect to have a total of three to six phone sessions each month.
3. Email or Phone Check-ins
While you're in the ADD Coaching program, you'll get an email or phone call once or twice a week. Check-ins are meant to provide a healthy level of accountability. Through feedback and friendly reminders, they'll help you stay on track and continue your progress between sessions.
4. Optional On-site Organizing Sessions
If you live in
NE Wisconsin
or the UP, you can also take advantage of on-site organizational help. These hands-on sessions usually last 2-3 hours at a time. During our sessions, you'll clear away clutter, set up systems designed to work with your ADD, and learn strategies for maintaining a leaner, cleaner environment.
How Long Does the Program Take?
The duration of your coaching program depends on your goals. If you're interested in making serious progress, you should be thinking in terms of at least three to six months.
